What colours are in a Sphere palette?
Sphere palettes each contain 320 colours in total, spread out over 16 cards. All of these are precisely calibrated to your temperature and brightness (tonality).
For the clear colours, we have: pink, red, orange, yellow, chartreuse, sap green, true green, turquoise, cyan, blue, purple and violet.
You get a full card for each of these, so you can see the light to dark and warm to cool span that you have. You get an overview of the entire section of colour space that works as your clear pink, red, etc….
In the dark colours, we have the same hues but now in a darkened version, giving us amaranth (darkened pink), burgundy (darkened red), rust (etc.), camel, pea green, kiwi green, emerald, teal, petrol, navy, grape and aubergine.
In the pastels, the same hues are lightened and that gives blossom, coral, salmon, lemon, lime, pistachio, mint, aqua, sky blue, arctic blue, iris and orchid.
Both the darks and pastels are condensed into one card each – together with the clear colour cards, they also give you an overview of your your pastel and dark
Then there are the neutrals, the taupe family going from cream, beige, sand, taupe, bark brown to coal black, and the grey family going from white, chrome, steel, graphite to black.
The Feeling
Finding your own colours is always going to be special. It affirms your sense of who you are, helps you understand what you are made of, and brings permission to simply be. The pressure of ‘not good enough’ falls away. That’s the internal part.
From a practical perspective, so much money, time and energy gets saved when you know exactly what works and what doesn’t. Getting dressed, buying clothes, wearing makeup if you choose to, flattering hair colours – all of it becomes easy and doable.
The Difference
Get the beautiful results you always wanted, and skip the fluff.
- No seasons – Sphere palettes are not seasonal, because seasonal palettes violate how colours behave in nature in multiple ways – it’s a long story. You can read it here.
- No undertones – Contrary to common belief, undertones are sign of disharmony. Think of a red lipstick that turns orange when you put it on – the orange undertone appears because that red is too warm for you. The right temperature red lipstick just stays red, without undertone.
- No mess – Sphere palettes are ‘what it says on the tin’: containing all and only colours of their temperature and tonality. There are no colours left out, and no colours put in that have no business being there.
- Nobody left out – Stereotypes have no place in colour analysis. Dark-skinned people can have Light(leaning) palettes, not every redhead has a warm temperature, and Soft palettes are not the waste bin for people that don’t seem to fit anywhere.
Sphere is pure colour science instead. For everyone who wants to get their colours right, once and for all.
The Goal
The goal is beautiful style and storytelling for everyone.
Beauty is as easy as getting your colours right. Which Sphere makes truly easy since the science actually tracks and all the work is done for you.
Storytelling starts from the colours you selected from your Sphere to be your Signature.
Since your Sphere palette contains your ideal version of every single colour, you have complete freedom to select the colours that bring you joy.
The Science
- Sphere palettes are determined by temperature and tonality.
- Temperature comes in 5 steps, labeled A to E: cool (A), cool-neutral (B), neutral (C), warm-neutral (D) and warm (E).
- Sphere uses relative temperature (warmer and cooler versions within each hue) instead of absolute temperature (‘warm-feeling’ hues vs ‘cool-feeling’ hues). For colour harmony, it’s relative temperature that matters. Absolute temperature doesn’t (it only affects storytelling).
- Tonality is a combination of brightness and light-dark qualities, and has 9 categories, labeled 1 to 9: Bright (1), Bright-Light (2), Bright-Dark (3), Light (4), Median (5), Dark (6), Soft-Light (7), Soft-Dark (8) and Soft (9)
- Crucially, every combination of temperature and tonality is possible. That gives 5 x 9 = 45 palettes in total
- We find your temperature and tonality by draping under high CRI daylight lamps inside a neutral grey surround, or by using calibrated tester cards for online analysis.
